The fragility and unpredictability of the earth beneath our feet have shaped the artists’ experiences throughout this year’s Stokkoyart residency. Their journey from Trondheim airport to Stokkøya was redirected as a result of the Stokksundveien landslide almost entirely decimating the road and cutting the island off from mainland Norway. Consequently, the artists travelled there by boat; the way the island’s inhabitants and visitors have done for centuries prior to the modern bridges and roads being built. Until an old horse track was made accessible there was no passage to or from the island by car. This led them to consider questions around the liability of infrastructure and what happens when it fails to perform.

The four artists from British, Danish, Nigerian and Peruvian backgrounds have collaborated and explored the DNA of Stokkøya in Åfjord Municipality. They have channelled their experiences and research into the production of an installation comprising five painted sculptures constructed from steel found amongst the chaos of natural debris at the landslide site. Each shape has been transformed by the catastrophe from its sleek, streamlined original form to contorted, irregular and characterful objects which express the landscape’s act of rebellion against excessive industrial development. Accompanying this installation is a sound work which consists of social media posts relating to the landslide and the transportation issues it created, resulting in the building of new social infrastructure.

«We were overwhelmed by the dramatic impact nature has had on this industrial, hard-wearing material and were drawn to its subverted materiality which presents itself as soft and malleable whilst in fact it is rigid and strong.

As we see it, these sculptures are performing a duality by being both powerful and vulnerable simultaneously. The playful innocence of the colours invites you to fantasise whilst the bending steel reminds you of the fact that life is precious and fragile.

The colour palette has been sourced from our encounters on Stokkøya: the amber yellow of the chanterelles that we foraged and ate, the mint green of the rope from the boat we arrived on, the fiery orange of the sour sea buck thorn berries, the clay underground that caused the landslide that we picked up and sculpted with, and the fleshy peach colour which represents our experiences meeting all of you.

We would like to thank everyone for welcoming us with open arms. It is refreshing to become part of a community that is looking up instead of down, and where social innovation, sustainability and creativity are valued so highly», the 4 artists say about their work and stay.

The Danish visual artist Kirsten Bertelsen has for a number of years been associated with the art field in Åfjord and Stokkøya, as curator and artist for the collaborative residence with Central Saint Martins, with strategic art work on a municipal level, and with her own artworks.

Ingrid Pumayalla is a Peruvian visual artist. The interest of her practice is the preservation of nature, oral traditions and how they can survive and integrate within modernity.

Michael Taiwo: I am a London based artist working with image making and story telling. I hope to spend my time at Stokkøya forming a narrative about the changing landscape of the island and the learning about the relationship it´s inhabitants have with the island.

Christopher Pearson: I am a contemporary artist primarily working between sculpture, installation and printmaking. My work relishes the material unpredictability of process-led sculpture and its anthropomorphic relationship with the viewer by staging often theatrical conditions in which the interplay between colour, tactility and physicality, as well as various performative forces such as tension, weight, gravity, wind and light, drives my approach to making.
